This book is truly awful. The pace is incredibly slow, the characters are paper thin. Worst of all the proof reader took the week off. There is hardly a paragraph without glaring spelling mistakes.

Excellent
Rushed ending after too many details leading up, filler!
I stumbled across this book a short while ago and the description caught my interest. After downloading a preview and reading the book on the train i soon found myself unable to stop reading, only untill the point where i reached my exit station and had to put it away. The story kicks right off with a very interesting scenario that tickles your curiosity to find out more. The plot is interwoven in a Pulp Fiction reminescent manner, with pieces of the plot arranged in a non chronological order.
One thing that's instantly noticeable about the book is it's attention to detail, which i personally enjoy very much. Every character, every location and every object has it's appearance, behaviour and atmosphere described in high detail that allowed me to immerse myself in the story and play it like a small movie in my head. This attention to detail doesn't make it the easiest book to read, and from time to time i had to re-read a sentence twice to take in all the details. Not a single detail feels out of place or unnecessary though, and all this adds to the immersive experience i had reading the book. The writing style of the book is also very professional, definetely on par with books of well known writers.
The book's theme revolves mostly around politics and conspiracies, but in some areas it includes military, detective and adult themes as well, often mixed with specks of humorously written descriptions or dialogue. The story is very realisticly written, nothing apart from the plot itself is fictional and everything seems as it could happen in the real world as well. The characters are very well written and described, and even though the book isn't necessairily written in first or third person, most things or events in the book are described through one of the character's eyes, often combined with the character's morals and feelings towards them.
The book is very long and though this discouraged me at first, i found myself wanting to find out more about the plot all the time. The plot does not feel bloated with unnecessary detail and because of the non chronological order there's no expectations of an ending or any form of climax that force you to keep reading untill it's there. Instead, the story kept treating me with new events and characters which kept my interest peaked.

In short, this is a very interesting and very well written book and it's easy to see that the author has devoted a lot of time and effort into writing it, the only thing keeping it away from a 5 star rating is the book being mildly difficuilt to read for me from time to time. Other than that this is an excellent book that is sure to appeal to everyone who has an interest in politics, conspiracies or detective stories.
Dead Silence is a tremendous piece of work - It is a very long and very detailed book. The characters are therefore given a chance to be extremely well developed. The settings jump around a lot. Whats great about that is that each different story line has its own pace. Some stories are of underworld politics, some are action based and a lot of it follows Quiggan, essentially the lead character on his quest to solve one murder, that then spirals into a much larger and more sinister plot.
I understand that this book is his first, and also that it is part of a series. It is long - It's not like reading Lee Child certainly, but there is real suspense that develops and then the story switches to another place or time and it builds back up again.
I would highly recommend reading this book - Personally I love spy novels, action and adventure fiction and that sort of thing. This has a bit of everything and keeps me happy on my train to and from work.

UPDATE -

I finished it. It took a good while as it is a monumental piece of work. So many twists and turns. This is a great book. An editor would probably really cut down a lot of it to make it more manageable, but something would be lost. This guy has a real talent at telling a very complex story. This is what I love about - I get to read the raw work from someone who really deserves to be a recognized author. Give this book a go. Because it not only is a really superb story, but it ensures he keeps writing and hopefully gets picked up by a publisher.
didn't read it .... started to read decided it was too foul for me
incomplete ending
A very good read until the ending. I was disappointed that there was so much detail during the main part of the book on the various characters, but ended with an Epilogue on the remaining ones.
This book is truly awful. The pace is incredibly slow, the characters are paper thin. Worst of all the proof reader took the week off. There is hardly a paragraph without glaring spelling mistakes.
