This year, everything changes for Clementine Harper.

Fourteen-year-old Clementine has left her city life in Boston to spend the winter on Martha’s Vineyard. She’s what the locals call a “Washashore” (WASH-a-shore) . . . someone who has come to live on the island but isn’t from there. An outsider.

Clem doesn’t have any friends and doesn’t fit in. Her mom and dad aren’t getting along. Coco, her best friend, is three hours away.

But then Clem finds a fallen bird—an osprey—on the beach. And she meets a lonely boy named Daniel.

And everything changes . . .

Washashore Suzanne Goldsmith Books Reviews

This book gives me hope that people working together can save our planet. I love the characters and the lovely depiction of Martha's Vineyard.
I chose to read this book while on holiday at the beaches of Sanibel Island in Florida, where they have ospreys like in Martha's Vineyard, the setting of Washashore. Suzanne Goldsmith creatively weaves together an inspiring story about the plight of the ospreys on the Island, the values and actions of people who wish to preserve what is important to them, the challenges and concerns of adolescents as they develop and grow into young adults, and the resilience of the natural world of all animals - humans included - when people care for others and the world around them. Though written to appeal to adolescents, I found the many pop culture references from the seventies very nostalgic and authentic. The book also includes a variety of links to environmental resources to learn more about ospreys, environmentalist Rachel Carson, and various conservation and environmental organizations. This would be a great book for teenagers, school reading projects, and youth activists.
We are reading this with our mother-daughter book group and it's a winner. The characters and setting captivated both myself and my 10 yo and the story inspires stewardship and friendship.
I started reading this and then couldn't put it down. I identify forever with the heart of a young woman trying to do what's right while learning life's hard lessons. Tested friendship and first love and broken dreams and civic engagement and environmental responsibility are explored against the gorgeous backdrop of a beautiful island, fascinating Ospreys and the rich legacy of Rachel Carson. How Goldsmith wove this together is a marvel.
I loved this book. Goldsmith has a knack for capturing the little details that bring a scene and characters to emotional life. She is gifted at evoking mood and scene with regard to place--- her beach, sky and woods were almost palpable, and I felt as though I were there with the characters, feeling the weather, experiencing the cold and the wind. It's a great story, though, and Goldsmith moves it along quickly and deftly. There's no predictable happy ending; instead, the story's outcome feels organic, as though it were part of real life, where (as the protagonist comes to realize) "People and birds were alike. Things happened that hurt them or made their lives harder. All the time. But losing someone or something important didn't mean the end of everything. It meant you had to find a new way to do things." Goldsmith's characters develop, have their own quirks and reactions and world views, and they have to confront assumptions and change their minds. No stereotypes or cliches here. I particularly enjoyed the emotional and ethical struggles that the main characters have to work through. This is a wonderful book for teens, but it was deeply engaging for me as an adult. And I came away having learned a lot about Ospreys, nature, and ecosystems. A rewarding read on many levels, and one that I highly recommend!!!
From growing up on the shore, I could really relate to the story line of this book. As a math and science teacher, I found a lot of connections to the content which I teach. This book will make a great addition to my classroom library.
Washashore is a lovely novel with many layers. Goldsmith's selection of the 1970's as the time setting for the novel worked well because that was only a few years after Rachel Carson's Silent Spring was published, exposing DDT as a factor in the decline of many species of birds. The book's focus on helping support the growth of the osprey population of Martha's Vineyard was perfect for this time setting as there were only a few ospreys left then, DDT being the culprit. Middle graders who read this book will come to care about the environmental movement as they watch Clem's growing love of nature and concern about the birds. Additional story lines related to Clem trying to fit in as a washashore (a derogatory name for an outsider), her blossoming friendship with fellow osprey-lover Daniel, and her growing realization that her parent's marriage is collapsing add depth to the story. Issues of whether a few people can make a difference and how to work as an activist within the system are also explored.
